During the first year of your baby, you’re going to have to feed them with breastmilk as much as possible. For convenience, some mothers would use a breast pump and just put the milk inside a baby milk bottle.
But, at some point, your baby needs to eat solid foods because their bodies would require a lot more nutrients. So, this begs the question: when should your baby eat solid foods?

When Exactly Does Your Baby Need to Eat Solid Foods?

During the first four months of your baby, it would be best that they consume breastmilk since it contains a lot of nutrients that their bodies need to grow optimally. However, by the age of 4-6 months old, you need to start incorporating solid foods into their diet to achieve maximum growth potential.

When they reach 4 months’ old, solid foods should be added as a complement to their formula-feeding times. That is because, during this time, babies are instinctively good at pushing solid foods to the back of their mouth so that they can swallow them with ease.

In addition, there are also some signs that your baby needs solid foods. Some examples include being able to sit down on their own without much support, being able to support their head without added support, and when they are mouthing when given some chewable toys.

So, What Do You Feed Them?

Even though your baby can eat solid foods now, it is still best that you continue feeding them either breastmilk or formula milk. Again, this is to maximize their growth potential as these kinds of milk come with amazing nutrients that their bodies need.

Now that that is out of the way, here are some tips to help you feed your baby:

  • Start Simple- Start by offering one food at a time. Make sure that it doesn’t contain sugar or salt and you want to feed them one food for about three to five days to help you know if they are allergic to certain foods or not.
  • Go for Nutritious Foods- Two of the most important nutrients that their bodies need are Iron and Zinc, especially when your baby is already six months’ old. That being said, you can go for cereals that are fortified with iron, single-grain, and even purified meat.
  • Add Fruits and Veggies- Using the same principle of one food type per three days, feed them fruits or vegetables. Again, make sure that it doesn’t have salt or sugar added to it.
  • Offer Finger Foods- When your baby reaches 8 months, they can now be fed some finger foods. Feed them either pasta, well-cooked meat (in small portions), soft fruits and vegetables, and even dry cereal.

What Do You Do When Your Baby Refuses to Eat?

There are some babies that would not eat solid foods. The reason is that the pureed texture might be foreign to them and they are not keen on experimenting with new things (yet). If your baby doesn’t want to eat, do not force them to do so. Just wait another week and feed them again and see if they would eat it all.
